WESTPORT, Conn. – Joan Selda Balas, a resident of Westport, died Thursday, Feb. 25. She was 92.
Balas worked in administration and human resources for Standard Oil and Stauffer Chemical. After retirement, she traveled with her husband overseas and worked as a volunteer at International Executive Service Corps. During that time, she taught English language classes in neighboring communities.

Jeanne Toth, 79, Of Stamford
STAMFORD, Conn. – Jeanne Marilyn Toth, a resident of Stamford, died Tuesday, Feb. 23. She was 79.
As a teenager, Toth was a dancer until she was struck with meningitis, which she fought and overcame. Throughout her years, she was an active volunteer in many church-run programs. After the birth of her daughter, she began volunteering at Rogers Elementary School and was also a member of the PTA. For 60 years, she was a member of Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.

STAMFORD, Conn. – William J. Lukaniec, a resident of Stamford, died Friday, Feb.19. He was 92.
After graduating from Stamford High School, Lukaniec enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served his country during World War II. He also retired from Colonial Woodworking, where he worked throughout Fairfield County as a finish carpenter. He was also a parishioner at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.

NORWALK, Conn. – Maria Cristiano, a longtime resident of Norwalk, died Saturday, Feb. 20. She was 75.
Cristiano was born in the town of Silva Jardim in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, on Feb.15, 1941. For 20 years, she was employed at Perkin-Elmer in Norwalk.

NORWALK, Conn. – Bill Pappa, a resident of Norwalk, died Sunday, Feb.28. He was 82.
Pappa served in the U.S. Navy for six years as an aviation electrician, with a torpedo squadron aboard the USS Palau, and with a patrol squadron in the Navy Reserve.
After the Navy, he worked for IBM as an electric typewriter repairman. Afterward, he became a customer engineer with a two-year assignment in Saudi Arabia. He then became a senior marketing representative with GE Capital. After 35 years, he retired.
