Remembering Henry Heimlich, New Rochelle High Class Of 1937
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Henry Heimlich, M.D., inventor of the famed "Heimlich Maneuver," died on Dec. 17. The 1937 New Rochelle High School graduate was 96. He died at a hospital in Cincinnati after suffering a heart attack at his home Dec. 12. The Heimlich Maneuver has saved thousands of choking victims since its introduction in 1974. He also pioneered lifesaving surgical procedures and invented a chest drain valve that saved thousands of lives during the Vietnam War. West Milford Scales Back Jitney Service After Losing Federal Grant
WEST MILFORD, N.J. -- Senior citizens and people with disabilities in West Milford will start the new year with improved paratransit pickup — but reduced local jitney service. After losing a $110,000 federal grant due to demographics, the local bus service will be reduced to three days a week. It will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and cost $1 each way. WAYNE, N.J. -- Happy birthday to America's first dog lover, Albert Payson Terhune of Wayne. The dog breeder and author was born Dec. 21, 1872 and died Feb. 18, 1942 when he was 70. He would be 144 years old on Wednesday. He lived his life on Sunnybank in Wayne, raising collies at his own Sunnybank Kennels, the lines of which still exist in today's rough collies. He's best known for his novels relating the adventures of his dogs and life as a breeder. He wrote with an emotional appreciation for each of the Sunnybank dogs.
