Allendale Launches 'Books 'n Scholars' With Talk On Genes
ALLENDALE, N.J. -- Read about genes a hear a lecture at a library event on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The first Books 'n Scholars Lecture Series is 7-8:30 p.m. at Allendale Public Library, 500 W. Crescent Ave., Allendale. Registration is open. Participants are asked to read "The Gene: An Intimate History," by Siddhartha Mukherje. Ramsey ShopRite Raises Funds For Diabetes Research
Supermarkets in New Jersey and New York part of a family-owned supermarket chain rallied together and raised over $200,000 to fight diabetes. Inserra Supermarkets donated the funds to the Diabetes Research Institute and its Foundation. Funds will be used to launch a Lindsey Inserra-Hughes Immune Tolerance Seminar Series to Advance Immunology Research for Type 1 Diabetes. The inaugural meeting of this new seminar series was held this fall at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. WYCKOFF, N.J. -- Harriet J. Abma, of Wyckoff and Mahwah, died on Friday, Dec. 2. She was 81. Born in Paterson, she lived in Wyckoff and more recently Mahwah, and she wintered in Boynton Beach, Fla. She was a graduate of Eastern Academy and a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Midland Park. Before retirement, she served as Branch Manager and Vice President of the Bank of America (Citizens Bank) in Midland Park. NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J. -- John Philip "Sonny" Lennon, of North Arlington, died on Dec. 22. He was 82. He was born in North Arlington on May 7, 1934. He is the son of the late Catherine (Hibbits) and John J. Lennon. He worked at the Pfizer Corporation in Lyndhurst from 1993 to 1998. Previously he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in Kearny as a chemical operator for 30 years before retiring in 1990. He served in the United States Army from1955 to 1957. RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Ring in the holiday weekend downtown in Ridgewood Saturday through Monday. The weekend begins with Santa in the Park on Saturday from noon-2 p.m. at Memorial Park at Van Neste Square, on E. Ridgewood Avenue and Oak Street. A Christmas Eve Service takes place from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 14 Hope St., Ridgewood. Darien Cop Involved In Car Accident While Searching For Vandals
DARIEN, Conn. -- A Darien police officer on the tail of possible suspects in a graffiti incident was involved in a car accident at 2:14 a.m. Friday, police said. The two-car accident occurred at the intersection of Noroton Avenue and Ledge Road, and both the officer and the other driver were sent to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The officer was southbound on Noroton Avenue in a marked patrol unit, en route to a report of vandalism in the area, police said. Police: Bridgeport Man Held Mom, 5 Kids Hostage For Days With No Food
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A local restaurant worker was charged with holding a Bridgeport woman and her five children hostage in the basement of his Laurel Avenue home, according to the Connecticut Post. Marlo Macklin, 42, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree assault, first-degree strangulation and five counts of risk of injury to a child and held on $1.5 million bond, according to the Post. Danny was born in Highbridge, NY and raised in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx with his 11 siblings. He was educated in Yonkers, and was a 1980 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Florence Rose DiBari Jessup Orlando of Peekskill died Dec. 18. She was 86. She was born in Peekskill on Jan. 18, 1931 to the late Joseph Guilio DiBari and Rosa Cirillo DiBari. Florence was six when she and her five siblings were put into St. Joseph's orphanage in Peekskill after their mother died. She graduated from Peekskill High School in 1949.
