Stefan Hurta, 61, Of Garfield
GARFIELD, N.J. -- Stefan Hurta of Garfield died on March 1. He was 61. Born in Piestany, Slovakia, he emigrated to the United States in 1990, settling in Garfield. He is predeceased by his parents, Ladislav and Zuzana Hurta. He is survived by his brother Ladislav Hurta and wife Marta; and Zuzana Mezgova and husband Zvonko Mezga; nieces Adriana and Helena; great niece Alexandra. High School Filmmakers In Bergen County Can Enter Fort Lee Contest
FORT LEE, N.J. -- Entries were being accepted for the annual Fort Lee Film Commission's annual High School Student Filmmakers Festival.The contest is co-hosted by the Jersey Filmmakers of Tomorrow Bergen County High School Student Film Festival and the Fort Lee Film Commission. Deadline for return of entry forms is July 1. Films must be sent by Oct. 1. The finalists screening and awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the upcoming iPic Theaters of Fort Lee. Murphy Bill To Protect Military Spouses Passes Senate
YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Unemployment benefits might be on the way to military spouses if legislation sponsored by Sen. Terrence Murphy (R-Yorktown) is passed. Danbury Music Centre Hosts Medieval Music Day
DANBURY, Conn. —On Sunday, March 6, Danbury Music Centre is having a Medieval Music Day, featuring workshops for vocalists and instrumentalists in the afternoon, and a concert by the group Marginalia in the evening. All activities will take place at Danbury Music Centre at 256 Main St in Danbury. Workshops run from 1-5 p.m. and cost $25 to participate. WESTWOOD, N.J. -- A veteran chef from Tavern on the Green and numerous French restaurants has received a 'Good' review from the New York Times for a Westwood eatery he runs with his sons. Thai West opened last summer with Veera Premon, 63, and his sons Chef, 25, and Ten, 20. They also own Tisha’s Main Ingredient in Westwood and Thai Chef in Montclair, said the New York Times. BLOOMINGDALE, N.J. -- Library patrons in Bloomingdale can stop by the circulation desk and enter a jelly bean contest for every book they check out. Each book check out allows for one entry in the Guess the Number Jelly Beans contest. A jar filled with the candy is on the circulation desk.Winners will be announced March 31. Elmwood Park Students At St. Leo's Study Lost Colony
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- Skits about the Lost Colony of Roanoke were performed by students at St. Leo's in Elmwood Park. Students in Patricia Amato's 5th grade class participated in an interactive lesson to learn about the Lost Colony. They learned about Englishman John White who in 1587 led more than 100 men, women and children in the first attempt to find a permanent English colony in the New World. Orangetown ATM Skimmers Indicted On Grand Larceny Charges
ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- Two men already behind bars in Rockland County were indicted on charges of grand larceny and their bail upped to $1 million each, Orangetown Police said. Roberto Lombardi of Queens and Marius C. Dumitro (aka Daniele Cassano) Of New York, N.Y., are accused of installing a skimming device at a Provident Bank ATM machine in Nyack. Numerous victims reported in December that their accounts had been compromised and money missing.
