Bridgeport Breaks Ground On Pocket Park In Black Rock BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — It may look small, but the pocket park taking shape at the corner of Brewster Street and Grovers Avenue is big news for residents of the Black Rock neighborhood. “I’m 100 percent for it!” neighbor Carol Pietrzak-Kish wrote when word of the groundbreaking hit the Black Rock Community Updates Facebook Page, a popular spot for neighborhood news. The estimated half-acre park will replace a wide three-way intersection around a small center rotary with a flagpole. The Black Rock Community Council has held its annual Christmas tree lighting at the site for decades, but neighbo…

Martha Stewart Wows Her Stratford Fans At Bookstore Signing FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Willie DeWitt, a Fairfield University senior, went to a book signing by domestic doyenne Martha Stewart on Tuesday night because “I admire the more model figures of society and hers is a classic American story of hard work and passion.” Well, that and he needed a Christmas gift for Mom. Jen Simonetti of Shelton met Stewart in an airport…

Refugees Travel Rigorous Route To Make It To U.S., Connecticut Expert Says BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — If radical terrorists wanted to sneak into the United States, there are much easier ways to do so than by posing as Syrian refugees, according to Claudia Connor, president of the International Institute of Connecticut. “The process typically takes 18 to 24 months, and it can last much longer than that. It’s an incredibly rigorous vetting process,” said the leader of the Bridgeport-based institute. “It’s one of the hardest ways to get into the United States.” After the terror attacks in Paris last week, several U.S. governors have said they will refuse to take in refugees…
Stratford Man Looks For Ways To Heal By Writing — And Running Stratford Man Looks For Ways To Heal By Writing — And Running
Stratford Man Looks For Ways To Heal By Writing — And Running STRATFORD, Conn. — Bryan Ripley Crandall had a lot on his mind as he ran the Vicki Soto 5K in Stratford earlier this month. Crandall, director of the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University, ran in honor of slain Newtown teacher Vicki Soto of Stratford. But he was also considering ways he can help other teachers deal with violence in schools and in the greater world. “We will always have incidents of violence happening. It’s a sad reality,” said the Stratford resident. “So what is an English teacher’s reaction? How do you cope?” Crandall has begun writing related entries in hi…

Shelton's Cheesecake King Is Back In The Kitchen SHELTON, Conn. — When chef Brian Stockbridge closed Stockbridge’s Cheesecakes in Shelton last December, fans of the decadent treat wondered how they would replace its signature secret recipe. Worry no more: Stockbridge is back in action — just under a different name. Dee’s Kitchen has been open for business at the same location since August. One of the first things the new owners di…
