Cops: Phone Scammer Loots $1,800 From Fairfield Senior FAIRFIELD, Conn. — An 85-year-old Fairfield man told Fairfield police he believed he was the victim of a phone scam — but not until after he wired nearly $1,800 to someone posing as his “grandson,” police said. The man said a person claiming to be his grandson called him Friday evening to say he had been arrested for manslaughter and needed the victim’s help. The victim sent the scammer an $800 money gram and wired another $995 through Western Union, police said. The victim said he had poor hearing and thought the caller sounded like his grandson. Police are investigating.
