Paul Winter Brings Sounds Of Brazil To Westport To Benefit Bridgeport Kids If you didn’t make it to Rio for Carnival this year, you can still catch the beat of Brazil with Grammy-winning saxophonist and band leader Paul Winter and his My Brazil quartet when they play in Westport at Voices Café on Saturday, May 12 at 8 p.m. The concert is to benefit the Kids Empowered by Your Support (KEYS) program which gives one-on-one musical instrument lessons and group music instruction to underserved inner-city youth in Bridgeport, Conn. Without this group, the children would have no access to this empowering life experience. KEYS began in 2004 when musician and music educ…
Is It Art Or Is It Furniture? You Have Both With Trumbull's I.M. Smitten Is It Art Or Is It Furniture? You Have Both With Trumbull's I.M. Smitten
Is It Art Or Is It Furniture? You Have Both With Trumbull's I.M. Smitten Admit it, you’ve watched your share of home design shows. We've all learned that a key piece can serve as a focal point in a room and make all the difference in how a space looks and the feelings it conveys. Norwalk resident George Holley learned that lesson when he was trying to decorate  tiny bedrooms in a new summer home. The beds – let alone other furniture – barely fit, so he decided to make the headboard the focal point, only Holley couldn’t find what he wanted in any retail, antique or online shop. Luckily for him, he had access to factories and craftsmen in Thailand from a specialty …
Fairfield County's Ranger Ready Insect Repellent Wants To Be On Every Shelf Fairfield County's Ranger Ready Insect Repellent Wants To Be On Every Shelf
Fairfield County's Ranger Ready Insect Repellent Wants To Be On Every Shelf The makers of Ranger Ready insect repellent are sounding the alarm. Mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and gnats are more than annoyances. “The rules of the game have changed,” said Chris Fuentes, Norwalk resident and founder and CEO of startup Pic20 Group, LLC, maker of Norwalk-based Ranger Ready insect repellent, “we’ve gone from pesky mosquitoes at barbecues to tiny ticks that can maim you for life.” Around here, Lyme Disease poses an ever-present threat. In fact, area states like Connecticut have issued warnings, see “Lyme Disease Warning Issued By CT Department Of Health." And wh…

Area High School Sophomore Takes Lead In National School Walkout Day This year, April 20th marks the 19th anniversary of the horrific shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado that first truly brought school shootings to the national consciousness, and it’s also – for the first time – National School Walkout Day. At 10 a.m., students all over the United States will be walking out of class to protest governmental inaction in preventing gun violence. These days, we’re used to seeing high school students lead the charge for change in gun laws, and Lane Murdock, a sophomore at Ridgefield High School in Fairfield County and leader behind National Student Walko…
Norwalk Now Promotes Norwalk With City Hunt Norwalk Now Promotes Norwalk With City Hunt
Norwalk Now Promotes Norwalk With City Hunt We pay money to be locked in rooms with others to figure out how to escape; books with mystifying brainteaser plots rise to the top of the bestseller charts; and Sudoku remains as popular today as it was when it hit newspapers in the mid-2000s. We like our puzzles. Norwalk Now is counting on this for its first City Hunt through the city’s Wall Street and SoNo neighborhoods on Saturday, April 28. Participants meet up at 10:30 a.m. at O'Neill's Irish Pub on 93 North Main Street, “hunt” between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and then hit the after party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (You'll have to solve the clues…
Come With Me Or Go Alone: Jerry Garcia In Music, Art in Fairfield County Come With Me Or Go Alone: Jerry Garcia In Music, Art in Fairfield County
Come With Me Or Go Alone: Jerry Garcia In Music, Art in Fairfield County There’s a whole generation out there that fondly remembers touring along with the Grateful Dead. Alas, with Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995, the Dead, as they had been known and loved, were no more, but the spirit continues in the remaining members’ projects and in the many tribute bands that crisscross Fairfield County. This Friday, April 20, at 8 p.m. the freshly refurbished Wall Street Theater at 71 Wall Street in Norwalk, is hosting The Garcia Project. This band takes one specific show of the Jerry Garcia Band anywhere from 1976 to 1995 and recreates it, song by song. If you can’t make it …
Pure Barre Greenwich Celebrates Five Years Of Fitness For Community Pure Barre Greenwich Celebrates Five Years Of Fitness For Community
Pure Barre Greenwich Celebrates Five Years Of Fitness For Community Combining dance with exercise is nothing new (Jazzercize, anyone?), but Pure Barre isn’t about fulfilling your childhood ballerina dreams. While, a ballet barre is used, it’s not about plies – it’s about becoming lean and strong using isometric movements, building cardio strength and focusing on yourself. That’s what drew Ashley Allen to Pure Barre eight years ago while still a college student at Temple University in Philadelphia majoring in kinesiology. The Boston native was looking for a workout for herself that went beyond weight-lifting alone at the local box gym. She spent more than en…

Rosy Brows At European Wax Centers Support Axing Pink Tax Rosy Brows At European Wax Centers Support Axing Pink Tax
Rosy Brows At European Wax Centers Support Axing Pink Tax Pink hair doesn’t really raise eyebrows anymore, but do pink eyebrows? While pink does make a bold statement, pink eyebrows during the month of April signify more than fashion sense. They show support for cutting the so-called Pink Tax. What is the Pink Tax? When a dry cleaner charges more for a women’s pink (or white) oxford shirt than a man’s. When a women’s razor that is identical to its male-marketed counterpart except for color costs more. When tampons are considered a “luxury item” and taxed accordingly in some states. Notice a pattern?  (For the record: New York ceased to tax femin…
April (Snow) Showers Bring May Flowers: Tips for Fairfield County Gardeners April (Snow) Showers Bring May Flowers: Tips for Fairfield County Gardeners
April (Snow) Showers Bring May Flowers: Tips for Fairfield County Gardeners Don't let the snow on the ground discourage you. Rest assured, the calendar really does say April and it is time to start thinking about gardens.  Longtime Norwalk resident and avid gardener Laura White is certainly thinking about her own flower garden.  "The snow has delayed starting to clear my garden of old perennial stalks from the fall, but I should begin the maintenance in the first week in April," she said. White admits she didn't know where to start when she decided to turn a small patch in her front yard into a flower garden in 2000. "I've always loved flowers,&quo…
