Stratford Landmark Clough's About To Shut Its Doors After 82 Years STRATFORD, Conn — It was 1933 and the country was reeling from The Great Depression when Ben Clough first opened up shop at Clough’s Hardware in Stratford. Actually, the master carpenter/plumber/electrician started humbly with a table he set up in his sister’s dry goods store next door. Clough didn’t have a job, and he wanted to provide for his family. “He thought, 'Well, this might work,'” said his daughter-in-law, Evelyn Clough. And work it did. Woman, 86, Dies After Being Struck By A Car In Fairfield FAIRFIELD, Conn. — An 86-year-old woman who was struck by a car while crossing Black Rock Turnpike on Tuesday night died of her injuries early Wednesday, Fairfield police said. Patricia Barger, of Fairfield, was crossing the road from west to east near Katonah Drive around 7:45 p.m. when she was hit by a northbound car driven by Sharon Ranney, 63, police said. Barger was not crossing in a crosswalk, and there is no indication that speed played a factor in the accident, police said. She died at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, police said. The incident is under investigation.

Woman Reports Gucci Glasses Gone At Fairfield Car Wash, Police Say FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Fairfield woman reported a pair of prescription Gucci sunglasses went missing after she left her car at a town car wash, police said. The 66-year-old said the glasses, valued at $500, were in the car when she dropped it off at Splash Car Wash, Kings Highway Cutoff, but were missing when she returned around 5 p.m. Friday, police said.

Traffic Cone Causes $1,000 In Damage in Fairfield FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Veres Street man who was away from home for a few days came back Sunday to find a traffic cone had smashed his front window, police said. Police Burst Stratford Suspect's Bubble In Gum Theft FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Stratford man was arrested on shoplifting charges in Fairfield on Sunday, after police said he attempted to steal nearly $300 in chewing gum from the Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue. Police said store security officers saw Lee Elbert Best, 51, of Woodend Road, put the gum in a plastic trash can and leave the store around 1:30 p.m.. Town police found him at a Tunxis Hill Road bus stop, police said. Best was charged with sixth-degree larceny and warned not to return to the Villa Avenue store, police said. He was released on a promise to appear in court on Oct. 7.

After Urinating In Dorm Hallway FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Redding man was barred from Fairfield University’s campus on Saturday, Sept. 24, after he urinated in a residence hall hallway and took “a fighting stance” when public safety officers asked him to leave, police said. Man Stole $146 In Energy Drinks From Westport Stop & Shop, Police Say WESTPORT, Conn. — A Bridgeport man was charged with stealing 14 packs of energy drinks from Stop & Shop, police said. A store security officer detained Louis Bottone, 23, of Funston Street, around 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, after he watched him place the energy drinks, valued at $146, in a shopping bag and leave the store without paying, police said. Bottone was charged with sixth-degree larceny and held on $500. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 28, police said.
